history

Theaterhaus Berlin Mitte was founded in 1992 as a "theatre rehearsal house" on Rosenthaler Straße by the Berlin-Mitte district office. The objective was to support the freelance theatre scene by offering affordable rehearsal spaces. Initially housed in various temporary locations – including a BEWAG substation and a former elementary school from the Wilhelminian Period on Koppenplatz – Theaterhaus Berlin Mitte found its permanent home in a former school building between Wallstraße and Neue Jakobstraße in 2009.

Since 2010, Theaterhaus Berlin Mitte has been managed by Kulturinitiative Förderband gGmbH and funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion. In 2021, an additional location was established in Schöneweide in the former building of the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts, and  Theaterhaus Berlin Mitte, now encompassing the sites in Mitte and Schöneweide,  became theaterhaus berlin.

In 2024, the structures of theaterhaus berlin are to be consolidated and transitioned to institutional funding. This represents a significant milestone in the theaterhaus berlin's evolution and its continued contribution to the cultural landscape of Berlin.
