HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT: STUDIES ON SYMBOLIC VIOLENCE
Symbolically Violent Overwoked Young Artists
Symbolische Macht und Gewalt, Disziplin und Dominierung sind die Kontrollmechanismen, die sich in der klaren Sicht in fast jedem Bereich unserer Gesellschaft verstecken: von den Diktaturen totalitärer, kapitalistischer, demokratischer oder viraler Art, bis zu der Naturalisierung der Selbstüberwachung, -Optimierung und -Ausbeutung. Wir sind also ständig von symbolischer Macht und Gewalt umgeben, jedoch, ähnlich wie die Fische, die nicht wissen, dass sie nass sind, sind wir uns dessen meistens nicht bewusst.
Wie wirkt symbolische Macht auf den Körper und den Verstand? Wie kann man die symbolischen Machtmechanismen erkennen und sichtbar machen? Wie könnte Kunst als ein Ort des Widerstandes fungieren?
Inspiriert von dem philosophischen Diskurs zum Thema, Persönlichkeitskulten in der Politik und Kunst, sowie Video-Tutorial Kultur, in “Studies on Symbolic Violence“ erforschen die Performer*innen, durch performative und bildnerisch-installative Mittel, Mechanismen der symbolischen Gewalt im gesellschaftlichen und privaten Kontext. Durch die “Studien” kreieren sie diverse Räume, die zwischen Homeworkout und Comedy-Bühne, Werbespots und Verhörung, Parteimitgliederversammlung und Party alternieren.

Symbolic power and violence, discipline and domination are the mechanisms of control that are hiding in plain sight in almost every aspect of our society: from the dictatorships of totalitarian, capitalist, democratic or viral character, to the naturalisation of self-surveillance, -optimisation and -exploitation. Despite being constantly surrounded by symbolic power, we are mostly unaware of it – just like fish that don’t know they’re wet.
How does symbolic power and violence affect the body and the mind? How can we recognise and make visible the symbolic mechanisms of power? How can art function as a site of resistance?
Inspired by the philosophical discourse on the subject, personality cults in politics and art, as well as video-tutorial culture, "Studies On Symbolic Violence" explores mechanisms of symbolic power in social and private contexts through performative and artistic means. Through the "studies" the four performers create diverse spaces that alternate between home-workout and stand-up comedy, commercials and interrogation, political party gathering and a party.
