Zé de Paiva & Nasheeka Nedsreal
Das Auge des Zyklopen ist rund – wie ein Kamera-Objektiv. Wer das Auge lenkt, herrscht!
Zé de Paiva lässt in seinem Regiedebut am Ballhaus Naunynstraße seine Erfahrung als Schauspieler, Tänzer, Fotograf und Videokünstler zusammenfließen: In einer intermedialen Performance sucht er – gemeinsam mit der Tänzerin Nasheeka Nedsreal – die postkoloniale Bildordnung zu verzerren. Bilder legen sich auf Körper. Sie gleiten über Wände, Menschen, Dinge. Alles ist Bildträger. Die Bilder lasten, überlagern, transformieren. Was wir Wirklichkeit nennen, ist eine Collage von Bild und Materie. Bildstörung. Wer produziert die Bilder? Für wen? Für welchen Zweck?
Mit Cyclops stellt der Performer Zé de Paiva die Kamera, diese omnipräsente, allmächtige Bilderproduzentin ins Zentrum – als Widerpart, als Instrument der Herrschaft und der Ermächtigung. Wer führt die Kamera, bestimmt den Ausschnitt, wer bedient den Auslöser? Kameras machen sichtbar, geben Gestalt. Wer über den Apparat verfügt, entscheidet über die Art des Sehens und Gesehenwerdens. Die fotografische Praxis schafft die Hierarchie der Betrachtenden und Betrachteten. Sie ist Teil des späten Kolonialismus, der Überwachung, Kategorisierung, Verwaltung, der Objektivierung von Körpern und Menschen. Man spricht vom „Protagonisten“ und meint die Person vor der Kamera. Aber ist die eigentliche Protagonistin nicht die Person mit der Kamera, dieser artifizielle Zyklop? Ist der Rollentausch möglich? Was siehst du? Wer bist du, mein Gegenüber mit diesem Blick auf die Welt? Wie siehst du mich? Ist die Welt auf deine Perspektive eingestellt? Und wenn ich dich auf meinem Bildschirm sehe, wer bist du dann? Wer führt den Blick, wer verführt?
Cyclops ist ein Tanz mit Kabeln und Augen. Ein Kampf um Bewegungsmöglichkeiten. In der Performance suchen Zé de Paiva und Nasheeka Nedsreal die Aneignung, die Licht-Brechung im Dienst ihrer Perspektiven als Schwarze Protagonist*innen.

The eye of the cyclops is round – like the lens of a camera. Whoever controls the eye rules! In his directorial debut at Ballhaus Naunynstraße, Zé de Paiva merges all of his experience as an actor, dancer, photographer and video artist. In an intermedial performance he and the dancer Nasheeka Nedsreal seek to distort the postcolonial configuration of images. Images rest on bodies. They glide across walls, people, objects. Everything is an image carrier. The images weigh, overlap, transform. Whatever we call reality is a collage of image and matter. Image interference. Who produces the images? For whom? For what purpose?
With Cyclops, performer Zé de Paiva places the camera, this ubiquitous, omnipotent image creator, at the centre – as a counterpart, an instrument of domination and empowerment. Who operates the camera, decides on which detail, who activates the shutter release? Cameras make things visible, give them shape. Whoever commands the camera decides on how seeing and being seen takes place. Photographic practice creates a hierarchy of those looking and those being looked at. It is part of late colonialism, of surveillance, categorization, administration, of the objectification of bodies and people. We refer to the "protagonist," meaning the person in front of the camera. But isn't the actual protagonist the person with the camera, this artificial cyclops? Is a reversal of roles even possible? What do you see? Who are you, my counterpart with this view of the world? How do you see me? Is the world attuned to your perspective? And when I see you on my screen, who are you then? Who directs the gaze, who is the one seducing?
Cyclops is a dance with cables and eyes. A struggle for potentials of movement. In the performance Zé de Paiva and Nasheeka Nedsreal seek appropriation, the refraction of light in the service of their perspectives as Black protagonists.
